Earth Day – A History & How You Can Help
April 22, 2022
Earth Day is an annual event to demonstrate national support for environmental efforts. The concept of Earth Day began in 1969 by Senator Gaylord Nelson, one of the leaders of the modern environmental movement. He was inspired by the anti-Vietnam War “teach-ins” on college campuses and wanted to develop a “national teach-in on the environment.” He announced his idea at a 1969 conference in Seattle, Washington and the first Earth Day occurred on April 22, 1970.
Want to know how you can celebrate Earth Day? Here are 5 tips to help make a difference:
- Volunteer (see below on how to join a cleanup campaign near you).
- Use reusable grocery bags and water bottles.
- Start a garden and compost pile to help reduce food waste.
- Go paperless on your monthly billing statements (some companies even offer a discount if you do).
- Carpool with your coworkers.
